Summer’s Last Resort

The stereo is all treble
The copper pipes leak
There’s just a handful of pebbles
Between us and the sea
Between us and the sea
I bring what I can carry
You bring your baby girl
We can dream and be merry
At the edge of the world
At the edge of the world
And we’ll call it the summer’s last resort
And we’ll soothingly hum her
What tunes the summer brought
The attic’s a mouldy
Paperback library
This place has a memory
That stopped in ‘93
1993
We know we can’t stay here
We know we won’t leave
There’s reason to pray, dear
There are remnants of grief
There are remnants of grief
So let’s pray that the winter finds us still afloat
Or we’ll silently sing her
The last thing her daddy wrote
I found this on his desk
Could be a shopping list
Could be a poem, could be a goodbye note
We know we can’t leave here
We know we can’t stay
Let’s go search the new year
For any remnant of grace
For any remnant of grace
And let’s hope that the winter finds us still afloat
Or we’ll silently sing her
The last song her daddy wrote
And he called it the summer’s last resort
And we’d soothingly hum her
The last song that summer brought
And it passed sooner than I thought
Forget me not
When the Sun Has Fallen

When the sun falls down
When the sky caves in
When what is has been
You’re past trouble and the world’s past mending
When the sea drops out
When the iceberg boils
When your lifeboat recoils
You’re past saving and the word is ending
You shouldn’t have skipped the final lesson
Shouldn’t have heaped all your confessions
Onto the girl with the piercing scream
She’s just what she seems
You shouldn’t have sipped the shallow water
Shouldn’t have drugged the Doctor’s daughter
Shouldn’t have taken to extremes
Being nobody’s dream
When the sun contracts
When the fire dries up
When rotation has stopped
You’re past fixes, support is ending
When your new ground shifts
When your faith burns out
When the mute masses shout
You’re past prayer and your knees are past bending
You shouldn’t have hidden in the steeple
Shouldn’t have mingled with people
Shouldn’t have talked as if redeemed
Oh you shouldn’t have screamed
You shouldn’t have made the crucial copy
The way you did, being sloppy
You shouldn’t have planned, you shouldn’t have schemed
You shouldn’t have dreamed
When the top is blown
When reason has ceased
When gods can’t be appeased
You’re past guesses and past comprehending
When sound stands still
When gravity rejects you
When your angels won’t protect you
It’s no surprise you’ve had enough
There’s no ties and there’s no love
No point in trying to put it off
‘Cause when the sun has fallen
There’s no hope below and none above
You shouldn’t have hidden your agenda
Shouldn’t have played The Great Pretender
They must have felt it, that’s not you
It didn’t ring true
While You Were in England

It’s good to see you once again
Right here where we both began
Before there were any bigger plans
Much has changed since then
While you were in England
The paper mill closed overnight
Last June we had no fireflies
Josie has finally learned to drive
And so have I
While you were in England
Mutt got sick, I don’t know how
Couldn’t lift his paws up from the ground
I often think he’s still around
But Daddy put him down
When you were in England
They felled the tree we used to climb
In many a secret summertime
There’s housing now by the riverside
Ah yes and Grandma died
While you were in England
While you were in England
And I guess you can say
Our little world has changed
We’re changing day by day, it’s nothing strange
Some leave and some remain
Let’s not complain
How have you been?
Did you find useful things to do?
And the future that once spoke to you?
Tell me which one of your vivid dreams
Finally did come true
When you were in England
I always knew we’d meet again
I see you as you were back then
I meant to write and to stay friends
But there was a life to mend
While you were in England
While you were in England
My heart
